Looking for more racist comments? Here's one from a Spanish gag show!
The most talked-about issue for the past week was the racist comment made against Filipino medical professionals by Teri Hatcher's Susan Meyer character in the ABC comedy series Desperate Housewives. The reaction of Filipinos worldwide has been very appropiate but many are still waiting to see something more substantial from the producers of the show. The same goes for the racial slur hurled against former Philippine president Corazon Aquino in John Stewart's show.
But while many people were not looking, a gag show in Spain had also made a nasty comment about Filipinos long before the Desperate Housewives brouhaha. It's recorded in this video, around 01:37, of the show called Polonia.
The plot is that the King of Spain, Juan Carlos, would go on a vacation; he hired an immigrant from Ecuador to fill his spot. He wanted his son and daughter-in-law, Felipe and Letizia, Prince and Princess of Asturias, to also take a break and for that purpose, hired Filipino immigrants. The racial sting was subtle but when you realize that these immigrants (the alluded-to Filipinos as well as the poor Ecuatorian) were portrayed as idiots out to substitute other idiots (Polonia has an anti-monarchy slant), then you would feel offended. I know I am.
*Sigh*... if only people realize that we, Filipinos, are really the ones making their lives easier...
I'm a non-filipino but looking to move to your country. I'm curious how do filippinos view of Spain? I'm mean they invaded your country and converted everyone to catholic. I sense to this day they feel superior just because they where the conquerer.
